Relationship Between Anxiety and Sleep Amount of the Patients in the Day Before Operation

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between anxiety degrees and sleep amount of the patients with heart problems in the day before operation.
The 53 sub lects for the study were selected from those patients who were admitted to S¡þteaching hospital for open heart surgery during the period from June to October, 1981.
For the characteristies of the subject¢¥s anxiety backgroand, trait anxiety scale of STAT, lwk obserbation of the subject¢¥s behavior and mood by wyatt scale and cortisol test in blood were admitted to the all subjects. The sleep amounts checked by nurse¢¥s observation, patient¢¥s report and family¢¥s conform.
The above characteristics of the subject¢¥s anxiety were using for the baseline data for the analysis of hypotheses.
For this study, 3 hypotheses were analyzed with the base of the baseline data. hypotheses were stated as follows;
1. The higher state anxiety score (A-State) of STAT, the smaller would be the sleep amount in the day before operation.
2. The higher anxiety behavior score by Wyatt, the smaller would be the sleep amount in the day before operation.
3. The higher hormon levels, the smaller would be the sleep amount in the day before operation.
The results of this study were as follows;
1, hypothesis 1 was not accepted.
2. hypothesis 2 was accepted, as it were, the higher anxiety behavior and mood by observati¡þon, the smaller was the sleep amount in the day before operation.
The mean score of anxiety behavior was 6. 6 and the sleep amount of the night before ope¡þration was 269 min.
3. hypothesis 3 was also accepted, as it were, the higher hormon levels, the smaller was the sleep amount in the day before operation.
The mean level of hormon was 320Mg/ml.
